The Canadian Harambee Education Society (CHES) is a non-profit organization based in Surrey, BC that operates scholarship programs in Kenya and Tanzania to enable academically gifted female students to attend secondary school. Since 1985, several thousand CHES graduates have gone on to professional careers in medicine, research, accounting, education, engineering, technical, trades, and have become leaders in their communities.
As many of our board members are getting on in years, we are looking for individuals who would be interested in serving on the board of directors and help oversee our programs. There is no stipend for directors who serve on the board as all monies contributed by sponsors goes directly to proving education for a girl in Tanzania or Kenya. However, the satisfaction of helping a young girl receive an education and have a future is priceless. Board meetings are held via Zoom every 5 – 6 weeks.
Even though you’d pay your own return fare, you might want to consider travelling to Kenya and serving as an agent there for a couple of months; that is another opportunity for retired educators. You’d even have time to visit a few national game reserves while there!
Please check out our website www.canadianharambee.ca for information about CHES. If you are interested in being a part of this group which has changed girls’ lives positively, please contact Joy Ruffeski at ches@canadianharambee.ca regarding your interest in being a board member, an agent, or even a sponsor/donor.
Submitted by Joy Ruffeski a regular newsletter contributor, a former Coquitlam administrator and president of BCRPVPA, an avid photographer and traveller as well CHES board member. Joy off to Tanzania this month to continue her terrific work with CHES.
